Kiwanis of Liberty Co. GA is pleased to announce the unveiling of its first lending library in the heart of downtown Hinesville on May 30th at 10am in Bryant Park. The initiative was the brainchild of the club’s public relations director, Tina Kitchings.
“These books will be directed toward children with special needs and siblings of children with special needs,” Robert Kitchings, current Kiwanis Club President, said. “Everyone wants to see themselves reflected in the books they read. It’s not too often where you get a book with a princess in a wheelchair. We’re not trying to replace any library in the area.” Kitchings was quoted in an article in The Coastal Courier detailing the program which will include book drop boxes in other locations in the city. Mr. Kitchings also serves as Fire Chief for the city.
The Coastal Courier also explained that, “The club will take responsibility for the installation, stocking and maintenance. The proposed library will be a small, weather-resistant structure. Chief Kitchings said the club wants to take guidance from the Downtown Development Authority on the library’s placement.”
Parents of children with special needs carry an incredible mental load — and research shows they are significantly more likely to experience stress, anxiety, depression, and burnout than other parents. One study found rates of anxiety and depression can be 2–3x higher among caregivers of children with developmental disabilities.
If you’re struggling right now, try this: take 5 intentional minutes today for your nervous system. Step outside, drink water, breathe slowly, text a safe person, or sit in silence without multitasking. Tiny moments of regulation matter too. 💛
