Liberty County Kiwanis is continuing the installation of lending libraries throughout the county with three in Hinesville, one in Waltourville, and one in Midway, and recently a sixth in Flemington. Six more are on the way. Each library, the brainchild of Tina Kitchings, the club’s Public Relations Director contains books directed toward children with special needs and siblings of children with special needs,. Everyone wants to see themselves reflected in the books they read. But it’s not too often where you get a book with a princess in a wheelchair, for example.

This isn’t just about books. It’s about helping children see themselves, helping others understand differences, and building communities where every child knows they belong. And the movement is growing beyond Hinesville, GA. This past August, leardership from our local group took the idea to the regional and state Kiwanis meetings. We had a room full of Kiwanis leaders from across Georgia, and a truly captive audience! The feedback, questions, encouragement, and excitement surrounding Every Story Matters™ were incredible.
The Founding Vision:
“What if a child could look into a library and see a book that represents them?” Liberty County Kiwanis Club PR Director, Tina Kitchings, explains her founding vision for “Every Story Matters™” lending libraries in a short video along side the very first such library in downtown Hinesville, Georgia on the public square (at right).
Tina continues, “Inside, you will see carefully curated books that represent children who have neurodiversity, different abilities, and just different circumstances so that every child here that picks up a book can see themselves in a story. And not only that, children can read about someone else’s story and maybe relate or understand them just a little bit better. And by doing so, we’re creating a community full of empathy and compassion and understanding.”
Tina, along with husband Robert and the Kiwanis club members see this initiative extending beyond Liberty County, Georgia, throughout Georgia and beyond via Kiwanis, an international organization, with headquarters in Detroit Michigan.
